As grandmothers, we can no longer stand by in silence. We have historically been the nurturers and caregivers of our children and we must stand for them now and be their voice. We must reclaim our traditional rols as Grandmothers and Clanmothers. We must lead the way for others to be empowered and come forward to say “No More!"

Shaima Khinjani

Born in 1982 in Kabul, Afghanistan, Shaima Khinjani grew up amidst war and civil conflict. When she was in high school, the Taliban regime took power, and women were denied many rights, including their education.

During that brutal regime, Khinjani broke the law by opening a secret school for women and girls in her basement. Initially, her family did not support the school, but soon after it opened, her father and brothers lost their jobs, and Khinjani became the only bread-winner in the family. This continued for five years, while she secretly studied English, which was also against the law.

As a young adult, she began working on radical programs to institutionalize gender equality in government. Khinjani began working with the re-established Afghan government after the Taliban fell in 2001. The first woman in her family to work outside the home, Khinjani served as executive secretary for the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, since its historic inception.

In that role, she participated in many official intergovernmental and bilateral meetings and negotiations in order to gain support for gender equality.

In 2006, she became a program officer of GTZ (German Technical Assistance) Gender Mainstreaming Project, where she supports both male and female civil servants in their personal and professional development. In that capacity, she negotiated for more than 500 civil servants to attend trainings in gender and empowerment.

Khinjani has attended numerous international trainings on gender and personal development, and is now continuing her higher education in the United States. She earned her B.A. in International Studies and Political Science, with a concentration on Gender and Women in the Middle East from Ramapo College in 2010, and is currently completing a Master's Degree program in political science at the University of Montana.

Geneen Roth

Geneen Roth's pioneering books were among the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that go far beyond food, weight and body image. She believes that we eat the way we live, and that our relationship to food, money, love is an exact reflection of our deepest held beliefs about ourselves and the amount of joy, abundance, pain, scarcity, we believe we have (or are allowed) to have in our lives.

Rather than pushing away the "crazy" things we do, Geneen's work proceeds with the conviction that our actions and beliefs make exquisite sense, and that the way to transform our relationship with food is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves-instead of punishing, impatient and harsh. In the past thirty years, she has worked with hundreds of thousands of people using meditation, inquiry, and a set of seven eating guidelines that are the foundation of natural eating.

Geneen has appeared on many national television shows including: The Oprah Show, 20/20, The NBC Nightly News, The View and Good Morning America. Articles about Geneen and her work have appeared in numerous publications including: O: The Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Time, Elle, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. She has written monthly columns in Good Housekeeping Magazine and Prevention Magazine. Geneen is the author of eight books, including The New York Times bestsellers When Food is Love and Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything.
